I Never Got

I never got a Barlow knife passed down to me from dad
Nor did I get a well stained Stetson that my grandpa had
Seems the relatives around me were city born and bred
I was the only one that wore the western hat instead

I never got a handmade saddle from my uncle Joe
That he used  before the war in New Mexico
Seems he was busy learning how to pull a tooth
Or crackin' jokes with his sister name of Eileen Ruth

I never got a pair of Garcia spurs that Aunt Vera owned
engraved  and  special ordered cause she'd telephoned
because no one in my family ever bought the gear
that to an old time puncher could bring to eyes a tear

but that's ok I didn't need the stuff some folks pass down
cause if you live long enough you'll buy it all in town
then use it, wear it or lose it or store it with no locks
so someone in the future can say "What the hell's in this old box?"
