Far Away

Sailing ships and pirates
up close, yet far away.

Conjured up in a cowboy's mind
like smoke in early May

that escapes into the air
from where it cannot stay

inside a fireplace of brick
where sits a solitary man

who reads about a place

while beans are warmin' in the pan

and desert wind blows constant
like blades on a whirlin' fan

but the words, they befriend him
like the sun of each new day

where the sailing ships and pirates
are up close, yet far away

when this cowboy's work is done
an' he's got time, 'til his next pay.
